Florence Nightingale gained fame as ‘The Lady of the Lamp’ during the Crimean War in the 1850’s. Considered the mother of modern nursing, Florence walked around the wards at night, lamp in hand, checking on wounded soldiers under her care. But even as Florence and her team of nurses laboured tirelessly to support their patients, disease became rampant, and the terrible death toll kept rising. In obedience to her call from God at the age of 16 to reduce human suffering, nurse Florence became a ground-breaking statistician and social reformer, keeping records, writing to officials, training others, and implementing radical changes to the health care system of her day. We honour Florence Nightingale and thank God for her courageous faith legacy that continues to enhance nursing practices worldwide.
