As a young pastor and theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer staunchly opposed the Nazi terror ravaged upon the Jewish community and in 1943, he was arrested for his association with a failed plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Full of deep concern for the welfare of the German church, during his imprisonment Bonhoeffer continued to pray and write, even as he ministered to other prisoners. At the collapse of the Nazi regime, Bonhoeffer was hanged to death on April 9, 1945. On his way to the gallows, he cried: ‘This is the end – but for me it is the beginning of life!’ We honour Dietrich Bonhoeffer and thank God for the courageous faith he inspires to stand firmly upon the Word of God as we stand against all forms of evil.
