Saint Benedict (480-540 AD)

Benedict was a disillusioned young man who lived in 5th century decadent Rome. Abandoning his inheritance and studies, Benedict took refuge in a quiet cave in Subiaco, some 40 miles away. There, he lived alone, seeking God and learning gentle wisdom through silence and solitude. Soon, others asked to share his uncomplicated way of life and together they formed small communities. Later known as the ‘Father of Western Monasticism’, Benedict modeled a simple life, lived in love. He taught his followers a pattern of Christ-like holiness that can be found in the ordinary, every-day rhythms of life such as: planting, harvesting, cleaning, praying; baking and offering hospitality. We honour Saint Benedict and thank God for the Courageous Faith he inspires to work towards a simple life, lived in love.
