Known for his stance against racing on the Sabbath day during the 1924 Paris Olympic Games, Scottish rugby player and sprinter, Eric Liddell, is remembered as a hero of faith for many reasons. After his gold-medal win that inspired the 1981 movie, Chariots of Fire, Eric went on to serve as a missionary in China. As WWII encroached, the British government urged all expatriates to leave the country. Helping his pregnant wife and two young daughters to escape, Eric stayed to serve the people he loved, and was interned in a Japanese prison camp where he died, aged 43, from brain cancer. We honour Eric Liddell and thank God for the courageous faith he inspires to stand with conviction and confidence in the face of danger and suffering.
